IKEA - Why They're So Successful

My wife and I bought all of our first furniture from IKEA after we got married. Some of it, like the coffee table, didn't last long due to the cheap construction and material. Overall, while most of the quality is lacking. Given the low cost and relative simplistic nature of the products, I think it was money well spent. It's been almost ten years and I still have almost everything I bought there. The coffee table only lasted about two years before it broke. But I actually took many of the same ideas, dimensions and concepts and improved on them, building it out of quality materials and fixing some of the structural flaws the old one suffered from. (So now I have a solid oak IKEA coffee table. 😂)

I think another reason IKEA has been so successful is something I think of the "Krispy Kreme Effect". When Krispy Kreme first came to Australia, there was only one store, in Sydney. At first, it was the stuff of legend. There were whispers of an amazing doughnut shop in Sydney, but nobody had ever been there. Until a kid at school came back from a holiday, telling people they'd actually eaten a Krispy Kreme. By lunchtime, the whole school knew. After that, any time somebody returned from a holiday, the class would gather around them and ask, expectantly, "did you go to Krispy Kreme??" If the answer was "yes", they were an instant celebrity. And then one day, a kid came back from Sydney with an entire box of Krispy Kremes to share with the class. Way to win us over! A few years later, Krispy Kreme expanded into most cities across the country... but it didn't have to. Even before we'd ever tasted a bite of those delicious glazed doughnuts, we already "knew" it was the pinnacle of luxurious doughnutty goodness. We were already hooked. IKEA was a bit like that. For the first decades of IKEA's presence in Australia, they had one flagship store in Sydney. And although reactions weren't as visceral as they were for Krispy Kremes - we didn't huddle together to gossip about Billy bookshelves and Malm beds in the schoolyard - nevertheless, by the time they expanded into the other major cities, they were already well-known and well-loved (often by people who'd never even set foot in an IKEA store!) They managed this through scarcity, consistency, and subtle hype. And it worked.

I think one appeal of Ikea in large cities is that it's easy to move the furniture 2 high rise apartments and assembly yourself. I also find the room display is very inspiring and gives you ideas how to decorate. Some of their stuff is a great bargain and some of it's overpriced. it's a real hit or miss.. I designed a kitchen that I never had any intention to do in my life because of Ikea and put it together myself. thought the quality was great. I was very satisfied with the quality and looks of it. Other things I think are cheap and flimsy

Fun fact: in the Czech republic, IKEA had two "fun" affairs. The first one is that one rug was named Hoven, and when there was a poster with "Výprodej Hoven", which originally meant "Sellout of rug Hoven" but it aslo could be read as "Sellout of feces". The second one is about presence of horse meat in the IKEA meatballs.

I live in San Diego. In California, we have strict building codes for earthquake resistance. In order to withstand an earthquake, buildings have to be able to shift. IKEA is kinda a weird company TBH. Firstly, they can use the most dominant advertising panel to promote something that few people actually need, or don't always need. The last time I went to an IKEA they used half of their outer wall promoting... A plastic watering can, so efficient. Then their furniture is kinda cheap in China, comparing to other brands. Which is probably due to that in China, furnitures used to be pretty luxury items that you would keep for decades after purchase, but IKEA uses budget materials to make things that won't last ultra long, but suitable for when you know you would replace the furniture after a few years due to taste change or just want to use something new (as powerwashing isn't popular here). And it's good for if you want a certain style as well, since there are not nearly as much "sets" as you would probably see in other furniture shops. Having to buy a table plate and 4 legs separately just to get a reading desk is just magical. The foods though, in China it's really not that budget. Especially since the food portion is not so desirable in Chinese standard. But then at least it's more convenient and it's not like you can get those kind of foods anywhere else so... No complain I guess.

I think their Swedish element is tied into their whole concept as a lifestyle brand. Swedes are known to be forward thinking, easygoing, and self-sufficient. And that is what the company themselves want to be, and an aspirational way of life for their customers. And it’s reminiscent in their signature aesthetic as well. Bauhaus and Neoplasticism are very clearly influences on IKEA, and the clean lines and straight edges have been hugely popular In Scandinavian art and architecture.

I've actually had an idea why they push the fact that they are from Sweden. See back when Arnold Schwarzenegger set up his first business he had two idea's. First was to make it cheap, Second get guys from his gym to do the work. He thought that woman would love to have beefy guys to do work around their homes. This business was going to fail when he heard about others who named their business to sound European. The idea is that people paid out the nose for something they thought was an expensive import. After that he changed the name of his company and doubled the price. And the business boomed. Its most likely the same thing with Ikea. A foreign company importing products and food to the U.S.

It’s cheap comparatively to most alternatives, and then it’s fun to go home and put together my new sofa or shelving unit. I get a big sense of satisfaction from it, and I don’t know why. Maybe this is one of the reasons they’re so successful, other folks enjoy building their furniture too.

I have thought about, living at one, literally. I mean with restaurant and bistro you everything you need. When you look at a display, it literally looks like a small apartment. I am sure it's meant to be that way. On the downside, they use to sell batteries made in West Germany, and Ihey still are cheap. But now they are made in China and certainly don't last as long as they once did. The quality of the cinnamon rolls has certainly declined. They use to be as good as Cinnabon, BUT now, they taste like pre packaged garbage! Finally, they use to sell coffee at their bistro and at least, here in Jacksonville FL, they only sell it at the restaurant. When I lived in Pittsburgh, it was easy to get to it. I use to go there just for the coffee and the cinnamon rolls! Also, to take a look at the as is section to see what they had available? Now, not so much!

Here in Portugal we had a tradition of furniture manufacturing wich was expensive but very very high quality and for us IKEA furniture is...welll.... SHIT.....S H I T..... however it is fashionable and modern and other fancy adjectives so people massively buy it...until IKEA appearance there was not even a thing called furniture packaging...you bought the stuff assembled and transported it like that, if you bought a piece of furniture it could well last for more than 50 years if you didnt set it on fire...now all the furniture stores followed the IKEA route and have "shitty-quality assemble-yourself furniture".... Sofas were brutally expensive and very long lasting and now they are so ridiculously cheap and can get torn and damaged in months if you dont have extreme care with them... even the fake leather rips itself apart if you look at it wrong......IKEA introduced all of that and i dont know if it is a good or a bad thing really...i just dont buy that brand.Period... i am all about quality vs looks.. i find it funny people saying they are decent quality...guess it alll depends on what you are used to...to our standards they are shit and people know it....they say " i know this cabinet is shit and will last for only a couple of years but it is cheap and preety and modern blah blah blah, if it gets damaged i will just buy a new and different looking one and I will be happier like that than buying an expensive long lasting cabinet wich i will be tired of looking at it because it will last so long
