Sticker shock: Why are glasses so expensive?

Liked this video but as someone who shops with lens crafters, I have eyemed and got raybans and all I paid with all the fancy stuff was 120 and I have used the same frame for years, I think, although unfair that they have a monopoly, if you stick with an all luxottica, eye plan you save quite a bit and I’ve never had a problem with my lenses

Well If you've ever had the direct comparison between 30$ china raybans and 130$ real ones you'll know where your money is going... Sure like 50% goes into branding and marketing but I have yet to find polarized glasses for 60-70 bucks that even come close to 100$+ polarized bans. Like the desing, fitting and materials used are superior by a longshot.

Just bought a pair glasses, €65 total. A classic shiny black acetate frame. The corrective glasses themselves, they correct exactly the same as my old ones, I see no difference in correction. Aside from that they have the same antireflective coatings, they are the same 1.6 extra thin glasses, and are supposed to have all kinds of extra properties like anti dirt and such. €65, for the complete kit. Compared to €310(or €210, as I got €100 rebate for not choosing an extra pair of "free" glasses) for my old glasses that did EXACTLY the same(aside from snake oil blue filter). oh, order, and receive the next day.

Anyone who bothers to learn about what they're buying knows Luxottica owns most eye wear brands, and the stores that sell them. Most consumers are cattle swiping plastic, so they are not the wiser. Nonetheless, expensive or not, if you want glasses that are nice you have to pay for them. There is a difference between designer glasses and gas station glasses. People are willing to spend money on a nice pair of glasses, and if you take care of them they will last for decades. I personally love buying sunglasses. They're an item of expression to me. But I don't own any Luxottica items. I buy other brands. The argument of "illusion of choice" is only partially true. Consumers see different names and styles. They don't care where the money is necessarily going. A woman will not buy Chanel to support Chanel. They will buy Chanel because they like the style and the image Chanel has. If every pair of glasses said Luxottica on them, people would hate it. They'd all have the same brand. Call it vanity, but that's just how the average consumer is. Most of the companies Luxottica owns were either poorly run, sold out, or literally have them make glasses for them. If Luxottica has a monopoly on the market, then it is a monopoly that has been granted via consent. Should glasses be cheaper? Yes. But it's not like there aren't inflated prices on other items out in the world. If you don't want Luxottica earning money, then buy brands that aren't owned by them like Carrera, Porsche, etc; and buy from online retailers! Be unique other than the average Joe/Jane wearing Ray Bans or Oakley's. How boring. Want to really talk about ridiculously priced items? Shoes. Shoes are a perfect choice like Jordans... or Yeezy's.... overpriced rubber gym shoes. How about electronics? When they release they're 3x the price that they'll be in the next year or two.

The problem is not what they charge, the problem is you have to have their products to compete. In addition, they put price floor restrictions what you can charge to ensure you can not charge less than Lux owned companies. If one wanted to charge $99 for a Rayban, Luxottica would pull the line for violating the pricing agreement. You have to charge it and you have to have the product.

  35. James Mason

It's really not an illusion of choice, it is choice. I wear glasses every day. My insurance company pays for new frames every two years and new lenses every year although they have a limit on what they'll reimburse. I am in the process of looking for new frames this year and in so doing have found the same frames, color and shape, in many different brands. Of course, the more expensive ones have little embellishments that make them more attractive, which leads me to choose a frame that is more expensive, but I'm worth it and will have them on my face for most of the day. The designer brands also remain more durable than the cheaper brands; I don't have to have them adjusted as often. In fact, I've had my glasses for two years now and they've never needed an adjustment. To me that's worth a lot, even the higher cost.

I wear glasses, but Luxotica didn't make any of my pairs of glasses! There's ways around the Luxotica near- monopoly, namely, by buying your glasses online! I use Zenni and pay a small fraction of what similar glasses cost in the major brick and mortar stores and Zenni glasses are the same quality as the $180+ ones by Luxotica and its puppet brands ( Ray Ban, Oakley, etc ).
