They can make cheap phones because they don't have to spend any money on R&D. they don't have to come up with ideas., features nothing because they steal all those things. Nothing wrong with them stealing tech, If I had an up and coming company in a foreign country I would do the same thing.

Unfortunately companies are forcing obsolescence by not supporting updates for older devices like the note 4. I cant get a new android for my T version of the note 4. I also feel they went with the non-removable battery so it again forces you to buy a new phone again and again every 1-3 years. Another thing people need to look out for when buying a phone is how much a replacement for a screen costs. These new phones are outrageous in their screen pricing just to have a curve on them or super high definition. This is why I went with a Xiomi redmi note 4x, ( another note 4 lol ) it's great, it cost a little over $100, and the screen is like $30 compared to $100 to $200 or $300 which makes fixing flagship phones not viable. One day these companies are going to have to wake up to the realization that smart-phones are ubiquitous since there are soooo many companies producing them for cheap like xiaomi. I love my note 4 and still use it, but would I get a new note 8 / 9 / 10? for 600 - $1000 + in 2019, nope. Even used they are $450 - $700, but then you have to consider whats left on the battery and how much and how hard it is to replace them. I wish I could just get another note 4 with upgrades like more ram, storage, cpu, and camera that stays up to date on the android os. Really the only draw for me on a new samsung phone is the DEX which allows one to replace their laptop or desktop as a basic computing device. Although it does not work great, it does work, and perhaps it will get better with time or the Linux capability. With the "throw away" mentality that these phone companies have with such high end devices that cost so much, it's only a matter of time that throw away design also equates to people only shelling out a few hundred at for a phone they know they can only use for a couple years at best. Self defeating in my opinion for companies like samsung and apple. That coupled with phones that can do it all at such low prices ( like the note 4 in 2014 ) will leave only the few who will pay so much for such expensive phones that are "old" in a year or less. The "flag ship phone" idea I think is on its last leggs since fewer and fewer people will be swayed by slight performance increases for maximum prices and since there are far cheaper options out there now a days from a myriad of companies, like google, 1+, xiaomi, huawei, ....... a dozen more. Nearly all phones are made in China, ( or thier parts, or assembled) so then does it really matter anymore if you buy a far cheaper Chinese phone? Unless of course they roll out the flexible screens they have been touting about for years someday, then its going to be a big shift over to that. Personally I'd like to have my computing and storage and battery on one device, then a screen that it links to via blue-tooth. that way you can have a "brick" in your pocket or belt or purse that has ever increasing performance over time and then have an interface device like a phone screen, tv screen, projector, computer monitor, roll up screen, overladed reality glasses ect ect. This way you only have one device for computing and storage and can use it on anything. With lines blurring between these devices other than visualization size and the potential of quantum computing it's only a matter of time. But that will be in like 10-20 years....sadness.

The only thing the chinese market needs to dominate in the tech field, is a reliable platform were to sell their goods so they attract more customers. *But that would cost money.* While chinese phone's prices are pure eyecandy they offer poor, if any, customer support. And that's the first thing in a consumer's mind, if there will be someone to back him up if his product comes faulty. Because it will happen, at least once.

#4, spinning intellectual property *theft* into a utopian vision of open source “sharing of ideas” is ludicrous! Inventing new tech is incredibly expensive. These companies take the short cut and steal other ideas instead of innovating themselves! If there were only Chinese copycats on the market, we’d still be stuck with primitive feature phones as none of them would have been willing to invest in R&D. Their phones certainly wouldn’t look like they do if it weren’t for Apple, Google, and co. Their way of doing things isn’t sustainable. It’s great that you can get a somewhat decent phone for 100 bucks, but you really should give credit where it’s due.

The answer is... world domination and power! They invest money to give us a technological Trojan Horse. All Chinese companies are controlled by government and have to obey. Huawei, Xiaomi, they all install software that is watching you and sends data to Chinese servers. How can I know this? Install a firewall and see for yourself! These things send an information about you every few minutes. God only knows what kind of data it is. I disabled ALL tracking functions in the settings menu. Yet, the software is still running and sending SOMETHING. They spend looots of money to handle all of this traffic from all of the phones that they have sent worldwide so far. Their technical support does not care.

People don't seem to realize that the patent thing is more of a monopoly over technology in some cases. Almost every country went through the phase of copying others. The US copied Britain back in 19th century. German did the same back in early 20th. Japan copied the US in 70s and 80s. SK copied others. Even till today, the US is still probing on European companies. The reason why you hear so much about China copying other is just political need. Kids are naive they just buy into the media shit so easily.

If any people outside of China is concerned with the use of Chinese phones, the simple answer is not to buy them. But then China does not care. I recall reading an interview of Oppo (a popular phone maker in China) when asked why it did not expand overseas, the answer given was that it would not bother because one single Chinese province like Sichuan has a population of 91 million which is almost double that of the UK. And there are 34 administrative regions in China (including Taiwan which the mainland has not yet control) each of which was about the same size of a European country and some with bigger spending powers. That is more than enough for Oppo to try to develop. It simply would not bother spending resources to develop overseas markets. Well, Oppo is not alone in this.

This may be random but I just want to say that China is really rising on every level, more and more people around you are using Huawei and Xiaomi smartphones, and they are created in China not just made in China, China is thousands of miles ahead of the rest of the world in terms of mobile payment. Young people literally start to forget what cash is. Chinese Singles's Day sales has already topped Black Friday for years. Don't get me started with the world's longest high speed rail network and tons of word record breaking infrastructures. As a westerner, if you still choose to be blind and say you are okay where you are now, just wait to be surpassed even sooner. China did pirate and copy technologies before, but because of that, they are now able to create and even get ahead of other countries. You can do nothing to change the past now it's time to make sure that you don't lose the competition like a fool. These are all facts.

In the RoK itself, they have jumped into the automobile market (you don't do that if you are poor and especially not with the Hyundai Group in your grill). That is a big one you touched on there - far less R&D costs because they steal other companies tech (and are protected and encouraged by the Chinese gov to do so) instead of researching themselves. The recent Samsung case in the media is one of many but has blown up - how many billions did Samsung spend (and how many years did it take) to create their new display tech....and a Chinese company infiltrated and bought it for like 12m. It's less blatant in the west, I assume the market is somehow protected, but it's laughable when products are released here in China, and it's a 100% copy on every level. When Apple releases a new phone and marketing campaign - companies here will copy it exactly, even the ads will be the exact same style and pictures, expect with their own phones copied in there. And this is from larger players like Lenovo and Huawei - it's a little embarrassing. Even when computers like the Lenovo Air and Xiaomi Air came out here....c'mon man, can you copy any more. What people see from outside of China is just the tip of the iceberg. Here it is blatant - when they cross the border it's just recycled tech with a new name on it.
