What's it gonna take to upgrade? Modular phones. In my mind, it's an untapped gold mine, both for vendors and buyers. Who wouldn't want to make their own custom, one of a kind smartphone? You want battery life? Fit the biggest battery in your phone, and sacrifice your selfie camera. Make your own Frankenstein of a phone today!

I think they’re missing a good ol’ gimmick, I love gimmicks, they pull me in, like when you send off cereal box cut outs to get your name engraved in a cereal spoon. That’s why I wanna get the new galaxy note 9 cause I want the stylus it looks so fun to be able to do drawings and have your handwriting on the screen. Can’t afford it at all but yeah it looks sweet. Gimmicks.

I cant say for a lot of people only for myself. I have had Note 4 since it came out. I love the size of the phone. This phones durability is great!! I have dropped this thing numerous times and the phone has not cracked. I love that. I thought that I wanted the pen and use it but for my lifestyle I don't use it that much. The camera takes great pictures. The only issue that I have recently been having is the battery charger constantly is going out. I think lately I have been getting a charger about every 2 months now. It is making me think about getting another phone. If I could get another phone that does not have battery issues, durability, about the same screen-size and a great camera. I would consider changing phone. Its just knowing what phone is the best option for me.

in my opinion, there are few factors for those china records to go down on brands like HTC, Samsung etc. one of them being the main reason, and that is to be self-sufficient. china does not want Korea or Taiwan or some other country to flip their market in tech therefore theyre more foucused on promoting their own and encouraging people to buy products within their control. i remember how HTC one m8 in 2014 was at a clock speed of 2.3Ghz to us and eu but 2.5 or 2.6Ghz for asia. and their excuse was "our asian clients focus more on numbers" what is that crap? if companies like apple, huawei, htc, samsung, sony and lg are focusing on providing picture-worthy, stylish, showoff to your friends, charge everywhere all day, "dont listen to music through holes" and "handle with extreme, extreme caution" typa phones, they might as well reduce the prices coz highschoolers and social media sjws cant afford that much. in that case phones like Xiaomi redmi 6A are complete winners. Oneplus is winning even gracefully not to mention oppo which is doing fairly good now. low prices, good looks and higher numbers on things that matter like durability(oneplus is amazing), battery life, worthy clock speeds for the money u pay and latest updates and even newer phones try to reduce bloatware. decent camera quality for 90-300usd phones and waterproof factor. i would go for a non flagship phone than to buy a 1000dollar phone when i can easily buy an expensive lens for that price.

More powerful smaller phones are what we need, The next company to invest into making smaller powerful phones will make a ton of money as there is a demand out there that is trying to satisfy with larger phones but would gladly go with a smaller device. I would spend 1k on a small version (5 inch -5.3 screen) of a galaxy s9 or a pixel or a one plus.

I completely agree with what you said 01:41 that the core functionality has been met at this point. I am a student from India. In a country like India, most people (and especially most students) don't prefer the high priced section. The mindset is that if you get almost all the specs of a high budget phone (like iPhone X at around $1100/- in India) in a low budget phone (like Xiaomi note 5 pro at only around $208/- here), then why to spend 5 times the price. Even the "used phone" market is very successful here. Old versions of high-end phones are sold at around one fourth and half the price and most of these deals are done unofficially. Why is this important in India? Because India's population is around 1.35 billion and out of these, 1.17 billion people use phones here. Only a very small percentage of these are rich enough to buy a $600 plus smartphone. Thank you for this video. Although many people already knew this, it was needed to be spoken and discussed. As an answer to your question: Even though currently being completely satisfied with the current smartphone I have, If I upgrade, I'd do it for a better processing speed and a better built quality than the phone I currently use.

Instead I use Fdroid and Humble Bundle. I don't see any phone on the market that is worth over $50, IMO. My phone does movies, games, books, web browsing and editing documents for work without an issue. Until the wheels fall off, I am not getting another one and even if I did - I would be looking for something cheap that I can install the OS I want on it.

A new iPhone with the home button and no notch. I had the iPhone 8 and as small as an upgrade as it is, I went to the 8 Plus because it's likely the last time we'll ever see a home button on an iPhone. All my iPhones have lasted me a long time and the 8 Plus is the only time I've upgraded early. Before I finally went to the 8, I stuck forever with my 5s and then followed up with the SE. I didn't have much intention of going away from the iPhone 5 design in the first place, but got the 8 when I lost my SE and needed a new phone in less than 24 hours. If I wanted an iPhone, I was going to have to upgrade anyway.

Honestly I think it comes down to price. It wasn't but about 3-4 years ago that a really great phone was 200-450 and now you have phones regularly encroaching 1500 and there's not a huge difference in the price point. Half the reason you see people getting new phones is essentially because they can finance them and to a lot...you're already tied to a two year agreement so it seems like you're not out anything. I won't pay more than 150 used/refurbished and 200 for anything new. For what I use a phone for, there's a lot of options for me. Not to mention, I want a phone that works better as a phone than a camera, gaming platform or word processor. For all that crap I have dedicated devices that are dozens of times better than a phone will ever hope to be.

My tastes are a bit niche, but I haven't bought a smartphone since the n900 in 2009, and a lot of that has to do with homogenization. I'm pretty biased from growing up with computers, and always having had a relatively up to date (though never state of the art) gaming desktop, but the limitations of mobile web browsers, and most major market mobile operating systems are barely tolerable for me. I also can't stand the lack of tactility of using a touch screen for anything more than a mouse pointer. That combined with "growing up" with cell phones by Nokia, who constantly pushed the envelope with their physical designs, the fact that from more than a few meters away you can't tell any of these slate phones apart from one another, the appeal is nil for me. If that up coming Punkt MP02 had a mp3 player and expandable memory, I'd pay a smart phone price for it. As is I still may indulge it's hefty price tag, and maybe start carrying my lap top more, and even buy a mp3 player and digital camera. More devices to take up more space, but specialized, and compartmental so as to be able to upgrade "components." I really wish the Nokia 8110 4g was of higher build quality, as at this point, tactile keys, a 4g modem to tether to, and an mp3 player are not only paramount to the features I'm looking for, I really don't want much more than that. I would really love a rugged 4g phone running s60, with some decent processing power, but it seems every feature phone is marketed towards a budget. The market lacks variety, which I feel is ironic, considering variety is one of the selling points of our economic system.

The games on mobile devices have just begun to evolve into almost console level performance. The device user who does not need the power of “gaming “ devices may want better cameras, longer battery life, better sound or to pick out the phone that features any one of those capabilities. But what you have said is true. Most smart phones have done these things in one flagship package going across all of the manufacturers. Some excelled in some features while the rest cleanup the features listed before. Manufacturers may end up in a price war in the near future. They may push gaming to consumers to keep their business alive. Either way what a time to be alive.

I'm about due to buy a new smart phone. I currently have the iphone 6 with 16 GB. Qualities I'd like on new smartphone would be BIGGER storage, overall good durability (does not scratch or break easily and preferably be waterproof), bestest quality of camera, speakers, and screen, good timely security/software updates in the future, long battery life/fast charging, and if I accidently break my phone I would like to not have my wallet be gouged. It'd be nice if there was a headphone jack too, but since phones these days keep removing that option, I'll try investing in a wireless head phone. Budget would preferably be under 900. It's so hard to choose which phone to buy. :(

Think bout it that way: in the early 2000s, we thought cars could never ever get any better since just a slight improvement for aerodynamics is not worth a price to pay. Then suddenly automatics came in, and all kinds of assistant systems and soon we have autonomous cars. So the decline in sales calls for a drastic innovation, and we might really love where this is going.

I also want it to run Steam and GOG, have seamless controller support and wireless mouse and keyboard support, hdmi, Full sized USB 3 ports, a removable battery, an sd slot, integrated wifi file transfer functionality, the ability to stream to a second screen over WiFi as a second screen or a duplicate, more physical buttons, and the ability to remove any app I want without the phone having a hissy fit. It would be pathetically easy to make smartphones better. In a lot of ways, they are really horribly designed. If it was over all Battery 🔋 Screen 📺 plus Pressor 📲 how’s about something over all price wise not economically sorted. It’s seen to be a depressed action by Apple 🍎 🍏 Over all what makes a computer run outstanding Ram , Processor & memory the touch of how fast something moves. The operating system but Apple takes some of that stuff away how about the memory card or even your own person memory on the hard in the phone when now asked to buy a iCloud. So when does technology get a bench mark phone 📱 Everything comes down to a Apple phone Build a computer last year, can now build a better one this year less then 10 months. But I’ve had my iPhone 7 for two years the longest I’ve had a phone. So it says that I’d rather have a other Interest cause the iPhone keeps the hype to nothing.... it’s not attractive. Why Apple 🍎 The engine of a video card ? Hey there’s a new one ever year but a benchmark one might be better like the flagship iPhone 7

Maybe it's small for you. But I have small hands. My Galaxy S4 slips from my hand a few times every day while trying to reach corners of display. I wanted to change my phone 3 years ago, but I cannot find a phone that suits me. The only options are iPhone SE (old phone, a little small display), and Sony XZ1/XZ2 Compact (I wanted to buy xz1 compact but I heard that the XZ2 is coming out and when I saw how thick that phone was, I lost interest). All these companies make new phones every few months that are not that different than their previous generations. Some of them bring a few phones at the same time that look the same outside (P20 Lite, P20, P20 Pro for example). When you combine all of these phones from every company you get a few hundred phones that look the same. The only difference is how big it is (Large, XL, or XXXL), how big the notch is, if it runs android or ios. BTW I was not thinking about the iPhone X or XS with 1000$ price tag, but the flagships in general. New Huawei Mate 20 Pro is 1000$, the next one will be S10. What do you think where is this going?! I bought a flagship phone (Galaxy S4 at that moment) on preorder for 500€ 5 years ago.

That's too small. Also don't fucking lie,the iPhone X is a beautiful phone. I agree that the 1000 dollars are not so beautiful tho😂

It’s going to take my current phone to either be unable to play PUBG or for it to just go full brick mode and stop working. I have an iPhone 6s and it is good

ill upgrade my smartphone when my current one dies, i don't see a reason to upgrade it every year, its the same with gaming pc's - ill only upgrade it if i need it, so when it dies or when i want to play a new game that my current one can't run

Why would I pay for 1.000 dollars Iphone X, if I could buy something better?

My current daily driver is a htc from 2016, still fast enough, loud enough, and capable enough camera-wise to meet my needs. The display is absolutely killer, the vanilla s9 beats it out by a little bit and i've considered upgrading to that, but only if this one craps out on me for some reason. Even then, there is plenty about the s9 I'm not a fan of. As for iPhones, I just bought an iPhone SE... I'm still of the mind it'll be worthwhile only after 2 full product release cycles, so the twelve/12S or whatever, when they finally figure out their buttonless workarounds and bezel issues. Granted they made a lot of progress already and I like the phone but i have an iPad and there aren't enough (or any, really) iPhone only apps to push me into buying a bigger, newer apple phone.
