What's it gonna take to upgrade? Modular phones. In my mind, it's an untapped gold mine, both for vendors and buyers. Who wouldn't want to make their own custom, one of a kind smartphone? You want battery life? Fit the biggest battery in your phone, and sacrifice your selfie camera. Make your own Frankenstein of a phone today!

I think they’re missing a good ol’ gimmick, I love gimmicks, they pull me in, like when you send off cereal box cut outs to get your name engraved in a cereal spoon. That’s why I wanna get the new galaxy note 9 cause I want the stylus it looks so fun to be able to do drawings and have your handwriting on the screen. Can’t afford it at all but yeah it looks sweet. Gimmicks.

Here's another sad truth about smartphones in 2018-2019 that wasn't mentioned in the video: Just about none of them have user removable batteries like the S5 which I still use. Why is this not a talking point among people? Is society really that obsessed with form over function?

  12. Nathan Wilson

    Nathan Wilson8 วันที่ผ่านมา

I have a galaxy s4, it can do everything I can imagine I would ever need. It's the only smartphone I've ever had, why the hell do people keep buying new phones? Are there really that many people who get sucked into wanting the newest thing? Weird, if it functions, that is all that matters.

  13. tombell12

    tombell128 วันที่ผ่านมา

I'm a "function over form" guy myself but a lot of people out there are too obsessed with how good a smartphone looks & feels. People have forgotten what really matters & what matters is true function! I like having a removable battery too (I'm an S5 user) :-)

What is it going to take? When manufacturers stop playing the consumer for a fool. As much as technology is fascinating and takes the consumer into a world of possibilities, in the process of doing so, it is destroying the sociability and normal interaction and taking it to a group of kids texting to one another IN THE SAME ROOM and the list continues on how these THINGS have become almost an altar upon which the youth of today are sacrificed and impaired to the point of apathy of normal interpersonal relationships. The manufacturers are making a ton of money at how much actual profit per smartphone . . . and as the prices go up with the actual benefits per dollar not always totally increasing at the same ratio . . . why? because of GREED. But I would like to suggest that there are perhaps a lot more sinister reasoning behind some of the intent when all the motives and the results are calculated together -- my question would be: how much is all this actually costing us beyond the high dollar amounts of these technical dictators that control our waking moments . . . and how much are they actually giving back in benefits as opposed to what they have taken in the long run? That is for the individual to answer -- IF they even have a perspective with which to do so.

I've never had the latest Smartphone and could not afford one either. I wait till they come down then get them at what I call the right price for my pocket, but even I could not afford to pay for it outright and have it on contract. I first had the Samsung S3. Then two years later when the S7 had come out I got the S5. To be honest I would of stopped at the S5 but the fact that Samsung were now making metal phones made me want the S7 Edge a couple of years ago, and it's the most I have ever paid on a monthly contract which was £30 per month with unlimited calls and texts. I only owe 2 more payments on my phone and I am extremely happy enough with it and will not be upgrading for anything else. So come the end of February all it will cost me a month is £14 for my calls texts and data usage. My S7 edge looks as new as the day I had it, and I have never dropped a phone in my life. I also think the S7 edge is bigger than any phones needs to be, so these newer phones that are much bigger like the S8 and S9 do not even entice me to get a new one. Maybe when the S7 eventually breaks down I will get a new one, but until it does that's still my baby and I am happy enough with it.

Nice observations, it’s a combination of the two, less significance to the changes, so lower priced $300 (mi mix 2) phones are now so similar to $1000 phones, that many people are keeping phones longer and buying 200 to 400 dollar phones. That won’t change for the long term, because by this time next year, the mi mix 3 (and similar phones) will be $300, and people just won’t part with $1000 for a phone unless the value is a BIG jump up.

I was just thinking about this, and I google this question to see if someone would speak truth and revelation and it had to be you, right now I got a Samsung galaxy on 5 which I got for 20.00 new threw simple mobile, and I love it, its good in my eyes and it just lacks storage and security features, and I need a better phone with better storage and updateable and also have the option of dual sim and a bigger screen, As I been searching I see that the features I seek are in between 300 to 400 for basic stuff and beyond that is 500 to 800 and more for ridiculous stuff, Reminder I am happy with just a 20.00 phone so if I spend 300 to 400 and more on a phone, will I see a miracle of change with price, Which phone can be better than the Samsung Galaxy on5 that cost between 300 and 400. That has dual sim, more storage, and a bigger screen. I seek advice because I am thinking about just spending 1,000 and let this be the last phone I get for years to come. I hope you respond back or someone will, I google like crazy and youtube it and Huawei and Xiaomi seem like my two options, I like Samsung and its interface and features but I feel like I need to test the waters and see what other company have to offer.

I used my last phone for 5 1/2 yrs. (samsung mega 5.8) The only reason I switched was because getting a new battery and reformatting the phone was no longer solving the issues...So okay that one's outlived it's usefulness time to get another. Was my new phone top of the line? Nope. I have other things I can spend that kind of money on...I ended up getting an LG Stylo 3. I mostly love it, although the screen is a bit smaller than my last phone...and the camera is CRAP compared to my last phone. Will I upgrade for a better camera? Nope. I'm in the market for a dedicated camera...I can have a decent camera and my sub-$200 phone for MUCH less than buying one of the overpriced (but COOOL!) new cadillacs of phones. When this phone is no longer fixable by replacing the battery and/or reformatting the phone, I'll get the next low-end-but-with-features phone that's available. Bottom line is when you're on a really tight budget you gotta decide if you want to spend a grand on a phone or put 3/4 of that towards another item that will make life easier. And laugh at friends who replace their phone yearly.

The "premium" Apple sales model only works if the competition is clearly miles away. Clearly the competition is not anymore and people are realising that paying 1200 dollars for a device doesn't give them anything remotely to 3 times better than a 400 dollar device. The gaming space of phones will never come out, at least in the immediate future. No matter how good your hardware is, if there isnt any software to match, it's basically dead weight. There has not been any game on the phone that's both good, and doesnt drain your battery like a bitch. The only way gaming can be a thing on phones is when developers recognise it as a real platform.

Replacing a phone every year is retarded. Same way is retarded replacing your Hoover or microwave every year. Yes, when a new technology arrives, everyone wants it. But that doesn't mean that they will keep getting it at the same rate, because the initial smartphone boom was only a rush, not some everlasting projection. Smartphone will become like TV, and fridges and microwaves. That's their destiny and that's their purpose. Programmed Obsolescence is something that countries must fight with their Antitrust Institutions because it is anti consumer. For the same reason is anti consumer to hook citizens on drugs and pills. Big Companies will try to bribe countries in releasing fraudulent obsolete items. We must fight that. Phones shouldn't last less than 4 years.

Maybe it is not important to the majority of people but in my case i have some sort of sentiment towards my current phone (I own a galaxy s7 edge) which i have had for 2 and a half years and i have gone to various places with it (US, Europe, taken amazing pics with it), I love how it takes selfies, its performance doesn't diminish as often as with mid range phones (which i tended to buy before this one and renew every 6 months) amongst other things. I know phones nowadays have better specs but granted that top range phones are now 50% more expensive than when I bought mine i need to really save more money and consider if the upgrade it is really worth it (i am now thinking a phone should last at least 3 years in order to consider a renewal), but that is just me. I hinestly want to wait for the Galaxy s10 which I believe will be a breakthrough in the market (although i am scared to spend big bucks for it hehehe) Greetings from Mexico 🙋‍♀️

I have an iPhone X, and won’t upgrade until it breaks because I really love it, it’s really good smartphone, really fast, really good quality, really good design

I always buy a phone that's two years old and then use it for another two years or so. Don't feel left out or anything.

girl they need to give us one week battery life, thats the only thing that would make me think of spending 1k on a phone.
