I think it takes a lot of courage to say we may be the only intelligent/self-aware/cognisant beings in the whole of existence. Many seem to have an emotional attachment to a crowded universe & not being alone! My take is that it's far too soon to draw any conclusions. What we can do is to try & work out how detectable our earthly incidental transmissions will be to others - in other words, our broadcasts may just be to weak to be detectable unless another species is searching directly at us over an extremely narrow angle of their sky. The reason why projects such as Seti haven't detected anything to date is that we'd have to look in exactly the right direction. Some potential aliens may have decided NOT to broadcast their existence to all & sundry through caution of course.

There's a simpler explanation. Apply Occam's Razor. We're alone not because we are special, we're alone because we are ordinary. No anthropocentric wishful thinking needed. The examples of "near intelligence" he gives should be enough to understand that reaching intelligence by evolution is probably universal. Although the time taken would vary, and the spacing of the stepping stones arbitrary, the progress is always the same. Primitive - Hunter gatherer - Agricultural surplus - Urbanisation - Civilisation - Science & Mathematical awakening - Technology. All inevitable steps. The problem is not becoming intelligent, it is surviving it. Intelligence is an evolutionary dead end, it is the bamboo to our panda. Let's look at the evidence: the emergence of total war; that happens with the Napoleonic Wars. Total war, not because of the technology, but the expense in materiel. That's what made it total, the capital value of most of the world was spent conducting it, back then it was the British Empire. That process continued, with the value of the same proportion of the world being spent for 150 years, until 1945. Only after total war for 150 years did mankind decide to change things, the result being the post war consensus. That lasted until 1980, less than 35 years, or one generation. Look another way: we have the evidence throughout our historical and archaeological past; we see the "accelerated evolution" that intelligence enables, the trial runs are all around us, the failures writ all over our history. Evolution doesn't build on success, it succeeds surrounded by failure. Incas didn't have the wheel, they died out. The Greeks constrained democracy, they went. Egyptians got lazy, 3500 years for them... nope, not enough. List them, hundreds of civilisations, cultures and empires come and gone. The British Empire... a couple of hundred if that. Soviet Union - 70 years. The American Empire? Jury's out, but even one hundred looks unlikely. The pace of failure is quickening. Genetic evolution may stall at intelligence, in these timeframes, it is "cultural evolution" that takes over. It is a direct consequence of intelligence, and is still gaining pace. Again, an inevitable consequence of intelligence... universal. Only the details differ.

If we're talking about aliens as in intelligent species, then I am not too opposed to the idea that we're alone, or at the very least extremely far from any other intelligent species that we simply can't detect them. If we're just talking about alien life somewhere in space, then it's unlikely that we're alone. While this was interesting, and it certainly taught me a few things, this is all just speculation based off of imagination.

The guy is probably right that we are alone, but only as we know it, the only human beings as we know it. We are perhaps the only creatures who look exactly like us, and need the exact same elements that we need to live in the whole Universe, or even Multi-verse. But the chances that other living organism to be exist beyond our solar system, are way too high to ignore. Intelligent life would be of course less likely, but still, there has to be some of it out there, just not living or looking the way we are. Anyway, the fact that we are alone in the Universe or that we aren't, are both frightening, yet exciting facts. Life is just exciting, too bad it will likely end before we get to understand more. THAT'S what's depressing.

Humans have been broadcasting radio waves for about 100 years, so our furthest signal is about 100 light years away. If the universe (~93 billion light years across) were the size of the pacific ocean (~11,000 km across), then our furthest radio waves have reached about 12 millimeters. But we can't even observe our nearest star in any detail and that's only 4 light years away (~half a millimeter). On this scale the Milky Way galaxy is about 12 meters across and Pluto would be about 75,000th of a millimeter away. So it'll be about another 90k years before our signal reaches the edge of just our own galaxy, and then double that to receive a response. A civilization could have started much sooner than ours and have been broadcasting a lot sooner as well, but depending on how far away it is, it could take 1000's of years to respond, so we might as well be alone. A conversation with Mars could take up to 20 minutes for a response, so I couldn't imagine how excruciating it would be to try to have a conversation with someone 10k light years away lol.

  48. David Wührer

    David Wührerวันที่ผ่านมา

It doesn't have to travel to the edge. Just to the next responder.

I have had a entity 2" from my nose, not a light in the sky, right there, 2" from the end of my nose. Silent, no lights, unaffected by inertia, or gravity. It could be behind you right now and you would never know it was there. All of this academic, theoretical garbage, is a sign of someone who has suddenly realised that all of their studies, education and logic are instantly useless. They should stay away from the topic as they are not qualified to comment on it.

I always find it amazing but disappointing that scientists think we, humans on Earth, have the resources to see and understand every image or signal that comes through our scopes. We are tiny with tiny minds and tiny technology. Would an ant hill in Africa EVER expect to come across a human boot in the life of the ant or even the hill itself? Just because our attempt to see has only lasted a whopping century or a little more is reason alone for not getting a big picture. (And who says there isn't a consensus of minds from worlds beyond the immense light in the center of our galaxy that we, as a people, shouldn't currently know anything about the true nature of civilizations throughout the galaxy or universe? These minds would possibly PREVENT us from knowing anything. If they are super-intelligent from much more time in existence they might not let us join them just because we made a probe and have a telescope.)

Stephen...when they took you up on their spaceship, did they do any... Won't complete that sentence. But I'll just say you have a LOT of nerve saying there's NOTHING going on in our skies when we keep seeing things (consider the previously released gun camera footage from a Navy fighter jet). Whatever it locked onto could have been a SUPER secret man-made flying vehicle...but then why release footage of your OWN super-secret project??? Then there's the obvious...technically advanced beings would see Earthlings for what we are...primitive, brutal, and arrogant (despite being mostly fucking stupid). WHY would a single ONE of them land on the White House lawn, pop the top, and say take me to your leader? Why risk humanity learning their tech and then using it against them?? Speculation on my part, of course. But if I was an advanced alien there's no fucking WAY I would send my diplomats to Earth! My recon teams yes! But no WAY would I make formal contact with a planet full of people that think there's an invisible sky-daddy watching them when they masturbate...waiting to punish them eternally for doing so. You think we're alone with ALL that cosmic real estate out there (that we know of)? How small your mind is, Sir!
