Hey everyone: this dispatch video is part of the Vox Borders project. I'm visiting six places around the world to investigate the human impact of borders, and those six videos will be released in fall 2017. In the meantime I'm making these vlog style shorts. If you want to follow my travels, the best way to do it is following my FB page: facebook.com/johnnyharrisvox and signing up for the newsletter at www.vox.com/borders-email. I'll be asking for video ideas, feedback on the project, and answering questions as it unfolds. -Johnny

Hey, guys! Just to let everyone know, this video is poorly researched and the viewpoint presented is a fierce misunderstanding of Japan both economically and culturally. Please look into it and verify for yourselves just how wrong it is, don't take my work for it! Cheers!

Just wondering... he mentioned unloading your coins from your pocket and get something nice in place is satisfying (and maybe 1 of the possible contributions to having many vending machines), if the Japan government decides to reduce the number of circulating coins and use more paper currency or electronic transactions, will the sales from vending machine go down as well??

Having an actual person do work for you, by nature, is a luxury. Automating vending is a no-brainer. In order for there to exist a country whose people stand behind counters to only accept money in exchange for goods there must be a group of people in the population demanding their infinite servility. If there was a really gluttonous and cowardly royal family (get that image of Saudi Arabian men's chunky thighs out of your head--they're Semitic and that's racist!) that wanted to make peasants too afraid to come murder them, wouldn't they just tell everyone this: "Ok guys- you win--now you can vote.. So, I'm going to run against my uncle and we'll be the two parties and everyone who doesn't vote is giving up their own power"? No matter who wins, the person making decisions for the peasants will not be at risk of getting murdered because the peasants will think "Over 50% of the other peasants would stop me if I tried to kill the king." In the history of biology, when someone was monarch and said something unkind, the monarch got murdered by the peasants (because it's not natural to believe that your monarchy, which had been born as monarchy, could possibly be any "superior" to yourself). If there was a raffle each morning where it was determined randomly who was going to be monarch of the entire world the next day, all problems of the world would get solved. There's the guarantee of getting murdered if you make any demands with ill intentions (if you think you can get away with demanding things from people, as their king, which are not good-natured, you're one of the people who would get murdered the fastest). The entire population would behave. Vandalism and property destruction would be reduced because everything is under ownership of the monarch, and everyone is born monarch. Suppose a group of 80 people were camping and a fight broke out among them, killing everyone. The police investigate and find out that the fight had begun because two campers were being teased when 55 other campers were trying to jab back at them for having a notable god complex and being domineering in every sphere of life at the campsite. Then, 25 campers, for no explainable reason, literally decided to die in the place of the 2, and they did, but in the process the 2 were killed by the 55, the 25 killed the 55, and the 25 were killed all simultaneously. 80 million people died in WWII to protect a total of 10 million Jews at the time. In Semitic law, some people are legally deemed as being 1/2 the value of some other people. I wonder how many other people's lives they believe is equivalent to one of theirs. They aren't helping the Rohingya, who are currently being exterminated. How could a people with a reputation of being daylight thieves and really a scourge on mankind win a propaganda war? Hey, Japanese people, it's a space-gravity equilibrium since time has the same relationship with everything in the universe.

Automated doors the driver controls....think about that. That is not automation. That's a control or lever. You missed one of the biggest points: efficiency/time saving. Instead of going in to a convenience store, selecting your item, waiting in line then paying...you simply drop coins, select and go.

It is not true about automation. Japanese people are doing ridiculous things to avoid automation. Best example is construction road. During the day there are at least 10 times more people than necessary. Most of those people are directing traffic and pedestrians , just pointing completly obvious way. If it is one way traffic than those workers are used as substitutaion for traffic lights. During the night they put there traffic lights.... I know the reason for it is amout of people which need to be utilized because they can`t get fired.

The UK, where I live, couldn't have vending machines out in the open. They would be vandalised and companies would get rid of them due to this. I went to Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) and was amazed to see that vending machines were everywhere, and selling almost anything. One machine in Hiroshima I went past was selling some kind of fish in a bottle of oil. I used the vending machines a lot as I always had change in my pocket, and as he says in his video, unloading the change in your pocket for some yummy treat, was nice. I found I was actually spending more on snacks and drinks because they were so readily available. Good video!

Japan has a reputation as an ocean raper. Recently Japan got Karma and just got screwed twice though for their fake scam of "research whaling" which is just commercial whale poaching in disguise, they tried to turn that into permissions for commercial whaling and got slapped down by IWC, and then got slapped down by CITES for killing an endangered species in whale sanctuaries. Japan is a bunch of greedy criminals look what they're doing to dolphin families and other crimes like wiping out the last of the endangered bluefin tuna and shark species for example. Japan are a bunch of dirty Yakuza mafia

Not sure why this guy looks like he is so annoyed by this. Assuming he is from US they have much worse problems of sprawling cities where people drive half a mile just to get the milk. Here in the UK I guess we worry about vandalism with vending machines. In Germany you get them for condoms, bike tubes and ciggies. I’ve not seen any for alcohol, but the baccy machines often allow cash, making the under 18 rule irrelevant. Hot green tea? Maybe that should be the drug of choice.

Based from sales perspective, having coin system is more profitable than credit card. If they use credit card, most people will just walk pass. But if they use coin based and you happened to finish your meal and have some coin change, you may think of using it rather than making your pocket heavy. That's where vending machine comes into play, to make customer buying something they don't really have to. Is there vending machine for action figure? not sure if Japanese love it, in the rest of Asia, everyone is crazy about it.
