The stupidity and shortsightedness of Kodak executives is hard to fathom. The very reason for Kodak's early success was their Instamatic in the 50's . The quality of the prints was poor compared to film, and always was, but they forgot that what made Instamatic popular had a common ground in digital. i.e: Instant result and gratification. And with the ability of digital to produce high quality images ( only a matter of time for technology to catch up) the hand writing was on the wall. The end of film!

Nokia did not invent Symbian. It was a Psion software product, and the best in the world in 2000. The problem was that Symbian was over a decade old when Nokia bought it. It would need a major update to keep up with wifi, bluetooth, and connectivity. Nokia didn't have the money to do this, and it should gone with Android. Just another NIH decision.

04:00 - INNCORRECT, online video streaming did Not destory Blockbuster. Redbox eliminated Blockbuster. They had the opportunity to buy Redbox before it became successful but declined. Then they waited too long to establish a Redbox like system. At that time Netflix only rented movies through the mail. When online streaming began to take a foothold, the already obsolete Blockbuster exhaled its last breath.

The Xerox blunder by far takes the cake as the stupidest one on the list by far. They had all these brilliant engineers and tech developers but the suites in corporate had no imagination or vision. Apple has had their ups and downs but now has a market cap of over a trillion dollars and Xerox can be bought and sold out of Apple's corporate pocket change with a market cap of about 6.4 billion. That's got to hurt.

Xerox a failure? Think again, photocopies / hard copies are still referred to as - " Hey it's a important document, I need to Xerox it ". This is the case at least in Asia Pacific region. More than revenue generation, grabbing the mind share of a customer is everything. Yes, they lost it. However we still remember & in relevance to the function they intended to achieve.

As a Xerox employee in 1973 I think it might be a stretch to say the company "gave away" desktop computing to anyone else let alone Apple. Xerox in those days owned office products, mainly copiers, and the products that supported them (paper, ink drums and maintenance). They also were developing and selling branded Xerox mainframes and researching alternate productivity tools such as the Hoskins COBOL language generator (a processor that turned decision tables into COBOL code). Their business was split in many different directions and, as such, the least potential product was the desktop business. It would be another 15 years before desktop computing would be able to do much besides spreadsheets and word processing.

Sad to state but there is a current disaster that is likely in the making . . . . . Ford. First, if Ford had bought Jeep instead of Chrysler, Ford would be a much healthier company today and Chrysler might well have disappeared. Then Ford committed mistake two, they sold Jaguar and Land Rover. Like Jeep, these were undeveloped brands which had plenty of room to grow--and did. Also, all three, Jeep, Jaguar and Land Rover offered a higher price point, and consequently greater profit potential. Instead, Ford is now left with only two brands--Ford and Lincoln, with the latter failing. Had Ford bought Jeep (the old AMC) and kept Jaguar and Land Rover, they would be well set for the future. Instead, they risk ever decreasing market share with almost everything being bet on trucks. The company lacks brand diversification. As a person who was a long time "Ford Fan", I find it disheartening.

As a proud resident of RotCore, I must correct you about Kodak's blunder. Their epic fail wasn't delaying the transition to digital, because they were dead before that. The patent for the Kodak Instamatic was misfiled, as a result was unacceptably close to the patent held by Polaroid. Polaroid sued Kodak, and was subsequently awarded $900 million. While Kodak filed for bankruptcy, their obligation to Polaroid remained largely intact. To pay their debt, they sold Polaroid and Canon most of their choice patents, including those for digital photography. My city went from the pride of upstate NY to something that looks suspiciously like Detroit within 20 years. Their allegiance to their workers delayed them taking advantage of NAFTA, which took our jobs to Mexico. Lawsuits and unions, coupled with greedy executives raping Kodak with golden parachutes killed what was once one of my city's largest employers. You also majorly oversimplified Xerox's fatal blunders, which are quite similar to Kodak, minus the major lawsuits part. It seems that you put tons of effort into your videos, however I have a suggestion. Read thru bankruptcy documents, which for publicly traded companies are public record. I only have the inside track on Kodak and Xerox because my metropolitan area died, and died hard, in large part because of their corporate blunders.

Only the USA thinks that only USA failures count. Ratners was one of the largest jewellery chains in the UK for years. It's turnover counted in the tens of millions. Then, at a company meeting, the founder and CEO explained how they could produce a solid sterling silver decanter and tray set. "It's crap". Although he meant it as a joke, someone in the organisation recorded him saying it and leaked it to the press. Within days the share price crashed, customers stayed away in droves to avoid the shame of buying its products. Later another recording emerged of him stating that a pair of solid sterling silver earrings cost less than a pret a manger sandwich and would last longer. They filed for bankruptcy shortly thereafter, all the stores closed down and all the staff went to look for other jobs.

I noticed some comments that America uses the Imperial system of weights and measurements. Not true. The US uses the Winchester standards, the source was the Winchester Cathedral in England. It was one of the first trading centers to standardize measurements for use in the Winchester market.. The Winchester and Imperial systems are slightly different. When British companies started building parts for American planes during WWII, the parts didn't fit American planes. The British used the Imperial system, but the aircraft drawings were in Winchester measurements. There are several different systems of weights and measurements in use in the US. Troy, avoirdupois, apothecary, land survey, liquids, to name a few. Generating different pounds, ounces, and I don't know what all. Bolt heads will be metric sizes with English threads. Mechanics must have two sets of tools, English and metric. Machine tools are marked in hundredths, thousandths of an inch, etc., thereby creating a metric inch. Then there are 3 different tons for large masses. .Thomas Jefferson insisted that our money be metric. But try explaining that to an American. But the problem is that Americans can't use the English system and can't count money, either. Just ask someone the question, "If 33 1/3 cents is the third of a dollar, what is the third of a dollar and a half? Wait for it.........someone is going to ask for the answer.

Only thing I was disappointed about blockbusters going bust was their workers losing their jobs. Having said that, blockbusters caused the demise of thousands of small independent video shops in the 90's. Their own fault in the end for not progressing with technology. As for Xerox, it's called "sitting on your laurels" believed their own hype & ignored the competition
